Holiday Work

Well its been a few weeks since I last updated my blog and I've now got something to post. I currently am spending my days studying and searching for a job. In the few weeks I've been doing this I am beginning to doubt that I really have what it takes to become a great 3D artist. I look at works by artists such as Grant Warwick and  Alex Tooth who are amazing yet so young and I can't see how I could possibly ever get to their skill level and find a job :/ I also beginning to wonder how anyone living in  WA could ever find a job in the 3D of business. Now that I think about it, how many student who graduated from my uni course have secured and have a job in 3D and how many are living their Dream jobs? I just feel as though I am wasting my time and that all my hard work could lead to a dead end...

Anyways I'm now working through 1000's of hrs of Gnomon tuts as well as really focusing on traditional art.

Some of my recent work (click images to see high res):
Sci-fi weapon I made it to try and improve my hard surface modelling skills

The Colt 1911 started out as a Gnomon tut but the tut didn't go into much depth so I decided to improve on it and add textures etc.

Drawing done at my recent drawing class.

I have several other projects in the works, one of which is quite large and hopefully will be a folio piece.

  1. Your 3d stuff is awesome Andrew. I doubt that you have already reached ur limit in skill. It's true that theres not much 3d work in WA, and it is a career that means u would probably have to travel to other countries to get a job or over east, but it isn't impossible. You know the drill of keep practicing and making an awesome portfolio and from there u will get a job, possibly with Blizzard or other gaming companies. If you really want to reach your dream u have to be willing to make sacrifices, giving up stuff and possibly ritual :P
There are plenty of other dreams that are harder to achieve than becoming a 3d gamer, such as artist or dancer or actor or professional stalker.
You can't say u have no talent with the stuff u've created.
With the current job situation, u have to drop your standards and work at a job that like no one would do, like my job, which ill be quitting at the end of this year so there might be a vacancy. But jobs like checkout chick, stocking, factory worker, jobs that will be boring and teadius but it is income and its not forever, it will definately give u more motivation to get a better job trust me :P Not to say that those jobs are bad for some, since people might just love those jobs but for others like u and me who want to strive for another career, it will only be temporary.
Keep ya chin up Andrew, and have some more fun! Awesome colt by the way.
